Adult Mobility Scooters
If you suffer from limited mobility, and you are not quite ready to give up your independence, then an adult mobility scooter may be exactly what you need. Adult mobility scooters are designed to give you more independence and freedom to go where you want or need, without a wheelchair or the help of others. Many people who suffer from arthritis, age, accidents, or illnesses are using mobility scooters for grocery shopping, mall shopping, trips to the zoo, and many other small trips that they would otherwise be unable to do independently.
Adult mobility scooters have seen a dramatic increase in style and technology since their introduction in 1968. They are now available in fold-up portable models for easier traveling. You also have the choice of front wheel drive or rear wheel drive. Front wheel drive scooters are typically smaller and are most recommended for indoor use. The weight capacity on front wheel drive scooters is normally around 250 pounds, depending on the manufacturer. Rear wheel drive scooters are for indoor and outdoor use, and the weight capacity is more around 350 pounds, again depending on the manufacturer.
Gas powered mobility scooters, although still available, have all but been replaced by electric versions of the scooter. Electric adult mobility scooters are, for one, easier financially, especially with the price of gas in such an unsteady mode. Electric scooters are powered by a battery, although some larger models take two batteries, and can be re-charged with a charger unit, either on the scooter or off. You also have the option to charge it from an electrical outlet via an AC adapter. This ease of charging has also been a deciding factor for most who choose to purchase an electric scooter over a gas powered one.
When deciding on which mobility scooter to use, price is usually always a factor. You should research the different manufacturers to determine pricing differences. Also, check for quality in the scooters. While adult mobility scooters are not inexpensive, they are affordable, and, of course, having the freedom and independence to go places that you could otherwise not go is considered priceless. Jazzy Power Chairs
Pride Mobility Products Corp, the manufacturer of the Jazzy Power Chair, entered the power chair market in 1996. Since then they have revolutionlized the industry and have created some of the finest power chairs available in the market today. Their goal was to make a product that had excellent indoor close quarter maneuverability and excellent outdoor performance. To achieve this they frontiered the mid-wheel drive.
The mid-wheel drive allows Jazzy Power Chairs to turn on a dime and perfectly positions a persons weight over the drive wheel. When this is coupled with the rough terrain tires and heavy duty suspension that comes standard you end up with a powerful chair that is made to conquer the outdoors. They even offer an active-trac suspension system on certain models that offers even more support. Jazzy Power Chairs also have numerous different types of seating options available, so finding one to fit your particular needs is never a problem.
Pride has been a leader in the development and innovation of the power chair for many years. They make a quality product that will reconnect you with the things you love to do.
Using Your Electric Wheelchairs Safely
An electric wheelchair can greatly improve your freedom and independence. Here are some safety tips:
- Make sure your battery has a full charge before leaving your home
- Make sure your lift chair has a functioning park break to prevent unintended rolling
- Follow the maintenance instructions provided by the manufacturer.
- Maintain proper tire pressure and check tire tread regularly
- Don’t use in poor weather such as rain or snow
- If you use a ventilator you should use a separate battery for the ventilator. This ensures that if you run your wheelchair battery down you can still use your ventilator.
- Be careful on hills and never go sideways across a hill or other incline because you could potentially flip your wheelchair
- Keep your electric wheelchairs maximum range in mind when you use your chair.
Using an Electric Wheelchair is very liberating, but, like anything, you must be careful when you use it. You should also make sure that you have a cell phone with you if you are traveling alone.
If You Use a Wheel Chair
If you are someone with a wheelchair, or look after someone with one, you’ll know how difficult it is to travel from place to place. Going places with a wheelchair was a phenomenally testing thing in the past, especially if the place you were traveling to had stairs. In today’s world however, modern technology tries to make things easier for us- and thus the wheelchair lift was born. A wheelchair lift basically does what its name says; that is, it lifts wheelchairs. Before this, someone in a wheelchair would have to be carried up or helped up stairs- if the staircase was large, that could be a problem. These days however, a wheelchair user does not even have to get up as he or she is comfortably transported using one of the many wheelchair lifts out there.
Wheelchair lifts will soon be seen in nearly every single building in the world- some governments have already made it a
requirement that those with wheelchairs must have a way to easily access public buildings. While wheelchair lifts can be expensive, there are a wide range of them available, meaning almost anyone can afford the lower end models. As science and technology continue to advance, more and more improvements are made to the wheelchair lift, attempting to make it as painless and as smooth as possible for its users. There are two main types of wheelchair lifts; the first hydraulic, the second electric. Electric wheelchair lifts are generally cheaper, although they will cut off if the power does (unless another battery is on hand). Hydraulic wheelchair lifts however have power in reserve, meaning that they can be used even in a power outage.
All in all, wheelchair lifts are fast becoming a vital part of modern society, and should you ever get the chance to buy one it is not the cost you should look at (although keep it within reason) but the benefits it will bestow upon those closest to you. While the cost may set you back a little bit in the short term, in the long run those in wheelchairs will forever be grateful to you for thinking of them.
